    Hi Emil,

    Today I updated responsive theme to version 1.9. I am using a child theme. After updating I cannot see the traditional responsive theme homepage with call for action button. I am seeing an error “fancy meeting here”. What happened? Please help. Here is the cached copy how it looked like:

    The website is

    Checking on this…

    Our homepage is gone too after a 1.9 update. We have it set to blog page, but all of the homepage widgets are gone.

    Our site is

    Thanks for your help.

    Ulrich will be getting back to everyone on this as soon as he’s back on.

    For those of you who have a child Theme with a customized home.php file, please take note you will need to rename your child Theme’s home.php as front-page.php

  • #81038

    I tried that, but still the widgets are gone :(

    What else can I do?

  • #81059

    for your homepage to return back to normal please look at

    it will work. this new update is very awesome new features to understand.
    all you have to do is create a new page name “home” then publish it.

    goto readings> static settings,  front page > home
    and thats it.back to normal

  • #81071

    I don’t use a child theme – or at least not that I am aware of. But have the same issue.

    Creating a new page called Home and change the readings setting to this page doesn’t work. It doesn’t go back to what it was. All the things shown under ‘Theme options’ and ‘Home page’ stay there – no matter what.

    Found a file called front-page.php. Removed this and everything was back to normal.

    @will whats the look of your website before? and what are you trying to achieve?

  • #81075

    What I’m trying to achieve is some changes to my website.

    Part of those changes is coloring the main menu bar. But so far that doesn’t seem to work on the development version of the website:
    Here, only 2 of the 5 items in the main menu bar are changing colors.

    In terms of colors it is supposed to look like the one on the production version:

    The CSS code I’m using is:
    /*** WLM 2013feb10 – Change menu colors when hovered & selected */
    .menu a:hover {
    background-image:-webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, from(#C00000), to(#4F4F4F));
    background-image:-webkit-linear-gradient(top, #C00000, #4F4F4F);
    background-image:-moz-linear-gradient(top, #C00000, #4F4F4F);
    background-image:-ms-linear-gradient(top, #C00000, #4F4F4F);
    background-image:-o-linear-gradient(top, #C00000, #4F4F4F);
    background-image:linear-gradient(top, #C00000, #4F4F4F);
    filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient(startColorstr=#C00000, endColorstr=#4F4F4F); }

    .menu .current_page_item a {
    background-image:-webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, from(#285EA6), to(#4F4F4F));
    background-image:-webkit-linear-gradient(top, #285EA6, #4F4F4F);
    background-image:-moz-linear-gradient(top, #285EA6, #4F4F4F);
    background-image:-ms-linear-gradient(top, #285EA6, #4F4F4F);
    background-image:-o-linear-gradient(top, #285EA6, #4F4F4F);
    background-image:linear-gradient(top, #285EA6, #4F4F4F);
    filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient(startColorstr=#285EA6, endColorstr=#4F4F4F); }

    please remove that coding,

    and when you add css, add it in the “custom css” field alone.

    Appearance>theme options>custom css

    and add this line

    .menu a:hover{background-color:#C00000}

    CLICK save changes.

    @will It is not recommended to delete any files from the parent theme. Could you tell what you have before a static page, blog or the custom homepage? Could you open a new post for your menu question?

    Ulrich Pogson

    @juliaplayedhere The widgets are not even loading. Could you be using a widget management plugin or customized the files?

  • #81162

    Thanks @ulrich , it worked. I see you updated the instruction documents.

    My front theme page with call to action has gone.

    I understand I need to rename my child Theme’s home.php as front-page.php.

    However, I dont know how to rename it.

    Can you please let me know the procedure step by step?

    Thank you,

  • #82051

    Hey, how can I just go back to version 1.8?  I feel so stupid for updating to 1.9 without checking for issues such as this!

  • #82061

    I could not get any success getting my home page back with the instructions.  I had to delete front-page.php AND restore an old copy of home.php to get my page back.  Don’t you guys test these things before you set them free on the public?

    Thomas Oliver

    @ Everyone,

    Please see this post:

  • #82192

    I tried those things. And specifically, the rename of home.php brought things back.

    However, as a result, the posting date of the home page is now shown.

    Moreover, the amount of space between the date and the main menu bar has increased significantly.

    See also:

    Where does that come from? And how/where do I remove this?

    Ulrich Pogson

    @will I would use a page and not a post as the home page. I find it strange that meta data is displaying when the comments are disabled.

    Please share your login details here if you cant solve it. Please mention my name so that I get it.

  • #82246

    I go crazy! Still no widgets. I do not use any special widget plug in.

    Please mention my name.

    I too have a problem with my homepage (404 – fancy meeting you here!), having just updated to the latest version. From reading through help I understand that I must rename my child theme’s home.php as front-page.php but I haven’t a clue how to do that!  Can you please give full instructions as to how to do this?

  • #82543
  • #82563

    I have.  All it says is:

    For those of you who have a child Theme with a customized home.php file, please take note:
    you will need to rename your child Theme’s home.php as front-page.php
    That’s it! And in fact, you can make that change right now, and your site will continue to work properly.

    What I need to know is HOW do I rename it?!

  • #82570

    It is a page – see also the second half of:

    Well – regarding strange things – there is more. But I guess separate posts for each is a better approach – right?

  • #82678

    yes, you are correct.

  • #82861

    Hey here’s my problem. My client updated the Responsive theme to 1.9 and after that the homepage was replaced by blog articles. I use Responsive Child Theme with slight customization (adds 4th widget). I opened up the FTP to change home.php to front-page.php but there is no home.php. There are only functions.php and sidebar-frontpage.php.

    What to do in this situation?

  • #82867

    Ulrich Pogson

    @bluesyblue Create a new page called home and set it as a front static page.

  • #82870

    Tried that, but it just produces a normal page called Home with nothing in it.

    The child theme is suppose to put the Widgets 1-4 below the main text box and they are as their own Widget categories. I am not sure how is the static Home page suppose to understand the child’s layout which is very different from normal content/sidebar page.

    This is how it’s suppose to look and looked before the update:

    This is how it’s now:

  • #82937

    Still no widgets :(
