Google Launches New Search Feature, Instant Previews

Search. It is still the most popular way internet users find information on the internet. And Google, is still the leader in providing users with relevant results for the information they search for. Not only does Google fulfill this process with incredible speed (Google recently adopted a fast search process which immediately displays results, called Google Instant), but beginning today they will be taking search results one step further and they will be doing it with a “whole new view” in mind. That new view, is called Instant Previews.

Today, Mountain View, California based Google Inc. announced on their company blog that they will immediately begin rolling out a new feature in their search engine called Instant Previews. As stated in their blog post entitled “Beyond Instant results: Instant Previews”,

Instant Previews provides a graphic overview of a search result and highlights the most relevant sections, making finding the right page as quick and easy as flipping through a magazine. To use it, click once on the magnifying glass next to the title of any search result and a visual overview of the page will appear on the right. From there, hover your cursor over any other result to see a preview.

What this means for search users, is that now when keywords are typed into Google’s search engine, not only will text link results begin to show instantly, but after clicking a magnifying glass icon once next to any search result, a graphical 300-pixel-wide thumbnail preview of websites will be displayed when hovering over all results. This preview won’t always be of what the entire resulting web page looks like however, the preview shown will actually highlight relevant content and portions of a web page related to a user’s typed-in keywords as well.

“Call outs”, or bubbles displaying the most relevant search information magnified within Instant Previews, will give users indication as to whether the site they are about to visit closely matches the type of information and content they are searching for. In a world where books are judged by their covers and first impressions matter most, this means the look and design of a website is going to play a very important role in whether searchers take that extra step in making the choice of whether to click a link or not.

This would lead some to assume that the best looking sites, such as the ones built with fancy Flash effects are going to gain the most attention to a searcher’s eyes when comparing results. Well, while that assumption may be the case, unfortunately those sites most likely will not be gaining much attention at all. Google’s new Instant Previews feature will not be displaying Flash content within websites, which means that sites built entirely in Flash are going to be at a very big disadvantage.

The sites that are going to gain the most attention in Instant Previews are the sites that not only look attractive in a 300-pixel-wide preview and that have clarity, but the sites that also possess good relevant content. Therefore, it is very important for a site’s designer/developer to know what their most important and competitive keywords are, and it is important for them to build attractive and relevant content around those keywords so that when that information is called out and displayed in Instant Previews, searchers will see greater value in choosing their site versus their other visual alternatives. As well, it is important to note that the previews being displayed by Instant Previews are pixelated and fuzzy so it is important for the content of sites to be easily recognizable.

Google’s introduction of Instant Previews is just another big step in their effort to providing users with search results quickly and giving them an experience which delivers the most relevant information they are looking for. With Instant Previews being displayed out of cache, users will not have to wait for previews to load, and by giving users something to look at visually, it will be easier for them to find the websites they have already visited in the past quickly without clicking on multiple links trying to remember which site it was they visited.

While the implication of Instant Previews on SEO and web design are still yet to be determined, the whole idea brings up interesting opportunities on both ends for how sites will be developed going forward in order to compete for clicks. The implementation of the Instant Previews feature is a reminder to those who are looking to have a website created, that it is best to choose an agency or company that specializes in both areas. With Google Instant, and now Google Instant Previews, it is more important than ever to have your website created with SEO best practices in mind and attractive design if you care at all for Search to bring your site more visitors than your competition.

Google adds new features to Instant, now available in 12 additional countries

Speaking today at TechCrunch Disrupt, Google’s Marissa Mayer had a few things to say about Google Instant, including the announcement of several new features. One of these new features is the addition of keyboard navigations. Also, Google Instant features are going to find their way into other aspects of Google, including News and Video search.

Additionally, Google Instant is now available in 12 additional countries. The new Google Instant features will begin rolling out in the next couple of days.

Google Launches Google Instant: A New Way To Search?

Google today launched an entirely new instant recommendation based search engine, replacing the Google we all know and love with a real time user interface. It’s hard to put into words exactly what Google Instant is, so here’s an official Google video talking about the new interface:

Google is now predicting and recommending search results before a user is even finished typing, leading to search results that change instantly as you type. The recommended searches however are no longer based on previous search history by other users, as they now appear to be heavily focused on major brands, television shows, movies, and corporate entities. Since Google Instant changes the very way users interface with Google, the implications of the effect it will have on Search Engine Page Results, Search Engine Optimization, and Search Engine Marketing are currently unknown even to Google. It is likely the industry as we know it is about to change drastically.

The relevancy of Meta tags in modern SEO

If there is one aspect of SEO that is continuously being debated, it would have to be the relevancy of Meta tags.  In the days of old, Meta tags were used to give search engines certain information about websites, such as a list of keywords associated with a particular page. After a while, however, webmasters began abusing the keyword Meta tag by including keywords with little or no content relation.  It did not take long for search engines to catch on, and one by one, they started dropping Meta tag support, or if they continued to support them, gave them a very low ranking in their overall search algorithm.

Now, you would think that the issue ceased to exist along with the demise of the Meta tag, but that is surprisingly not the case.  Many people still ask whether or not they should still be using them, and there are plenty of people that will still argue the need for them, or at the very least, the fact that using them wont hurt.  So, with that being said, let’s take a look at some examples that may help shed some light on this issue.

85-90% of Search Traffic Is Organic Search

According to ReadWriteWeb’s Strategy Roundtable, 85-90% of search traffic is organic search. Organic search is simply searches conducted by users without them going through sponsored results (ads), or other referral methods. This means that search traffic is still largely governed by users organically searching on their own. This also brings to light the overall importance of SEO (Search Engine Optimization), and SEM (Search Engine Marketing) in terms of making sure your website or brand shows up where you want it to in search engine results.

As much emphasis as the meda likes to put on social media and social networking, search is still king when it comes to increasing overall traffic, and subsequently revenue. Not that social media and social networking are bad things, for they can be used to increase backlinks, drive traffic, and increase brand awareness but overall good SEO and SEM will likely benefit most small businesses more then a casually updated FaceBook page or Twitter account.

When Google handles a search query, there is a lot going on behind the scenes that people don’t really think about. When you type something in and press enter, the results are actually determined by a complex algorithm which Google has been perfecting for years. Effective SEO involves an understanding of both how the algorithm works and the ability to adapt to any changes that are made. Let’s begin by taking a brief look at its evolution so we can better understand the state of the algorithm today.

A history

Before 1997, Google wasn’t even named Google. For a brief period, founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin used the nickname “BackRub”, a reference to the PageRank system that put Google on the map. Prior to Google, search engines dealt primarily with keywords, but PageRank changed all that by placing emphasis on both the number and importance of pages linking to a particular site. Since then, the algorithm has been modified numerous times to change the way it handles backlinks, as well as to add additional features.

Modern variatons

After additional updates in 2001 and 2003, arguably the biggest change to the algorithm after PageRank came in 2005 when Google implemented personalized search results. This is extremely important to search, as aspects of personalized results like geo-location can increase a website’s chances of being seen by someone within a specific audience. By 2007, Google had grown beyond indexing just the Web to show results for things like images, books, and news; all of which could be accessed with the same query with Universal Search. Finally, the last major update in 2009 added real-time search, with the ability to display results from social media sites like Twitter as they are posted.

Keeping up with changes

Unless a major update is implemented, it can sometimes be difficult to gauge the scope and significance of minor algorithm changes. Without a transparent set of guidelines, many users are left to their own devices to try and pinpoint the exact nature of how Google handles search. Some will argue that backlinks are the single greatest factor in determining PageRank and the authority of a particular site. Others will argue that personalized search and trending results are beginning to dethrone the mighty backlink. Whichever the case may be, most will agree that good SEO alone is not enough to maximize your search potential, and that taking all aspects of the algorithm into consideration is an intelligent approach.
