Tip of the Week: SEO-friendly URLs

Posted on January 3, 2012

Hi Everyone,

I’m starting a new series of blog posts called Tip of the Week where I will offer easy and practical tips that might often go overlooked on SEO, marketing, design and so on for your website.

SEO-friendly URLs

The default permalink structure for WordPress adds no SEO benefit, and is neither user or marketing friendly.

To have your URLs go from:

http://website.com/?p=123

to:

http://website.com/kittens-and-puppies-for-sale/

follow these simple steps:

- Log into your WordPress admin
- Go to Settings > Permalinks
- Set your structure to Post name and save

Enjoy!

Thanks, Bryan

Thanks for this Bryan, when I am attempting this in WordPress I do not have the post name option?

I have attempted to change to the others such as month & name however this only results in a 404 page error when you click on the blog entry from the home page.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Chris

Are you on a Windows host/server?

Got there Bryan as gave my hosting company a call.

As I installed using their “click & build” service wordpress was restricted, have managed to install using ftp this morning and import all settings over so now all good and the initial tip now works.

        Thanks.
